Teufelsberg, former CIA listening station over Berlin - Teufelsberg, ex stazione di ascolto della CIA sopra a Berlino

There’s a place that really got my attention among many others here in Berlin. It’s called Teufelsberg [literally: Devil’s Mountain] and the very structure of this small hill deserves attention. Second World War rubbles are hidden under its the surface and right on the top of this men-made hill some weird shaped buildings stand tall, thought partially damaged. They used to be a CIA listening station during the Cold War, which put simple means that its existence was devoted to monitor the military and diplomatic communications of the Soviet Union and its Easter Bloc, in central and eastern Europe.

What is left of those building can be seen in the photos down below. I ask myself whether such a description can be made, but I would define this place as both spectral and lively. The outer thin walls of the circular buildings are in many points wrecked, same for the spheres on the top of them. That’s for sure what makes the place spectral, but there are also graffiti of any sorts, representing animals and people or not better-defined objects. I wonder when they all appeared on these walls. There probably was a time, between the dismissal of the area, and the moment when it was circled by a fence and a ticket office was added at the entrance, when young people used to meet here, far but not too far from the city.

The hill is in fact a bit apart from the rest, you need to take a walk of about 30 minutes from the nearest tram. All around there are trees and small bushes, but beyond that there’s the city of Berlin. I really recommend to take the time to visit it and take part to the guided tour [I don’t recommend listening it in German version though, but in the case you have a high comprehension level].

C’è un luogo, tra i tanti qui a Berlino, che ha veramente catturato la mia attenzione. Lo chiamano Teufelsberg (letteralmente: la Montagna del Diavolo) e la struttura di questa collinetta merita attenzione. Sotto la sua superficie sono nascoste macerie della Seconda Guerra Mondiale e proprio in cima a questa collina artificiale si stagliano dei fabbricati parzialmente danneggiati. Queste costruzioni erano le stazioni di ascolto della CIA,  che venivano usate durante la Guerra Fredda. In poche parole era una base che si occupava del monitoraggio delle comunicazioni militari e diplomatiche dell'Unione Sovietica e del Blocco orientale.

Quello che rimane di questi edifici lo si può vedere nelle foto qua sotto. Mi chiedo se sia possibile descriverlo in questo modo, ma definirei questo posto spettrale e vivace allo stesso tempo. Le sottili pareti esterne delle costruzioni circolari sono danneggiate in più punti, lo stesso vale per le sfere posizionate sulla loro sommità. Questo è sicuramente ciò che renda l'atmosfera spettrale. Ma ci sono anche graffiti di ogni genere: animali, persone e oggetti non meglio definiti; mi chiedo quando siano apparsi su queste pareti. Probabilmente c’è stato un tempo, tra abbandono dell’area e il momento in cui questo è stata circondata da una recinzione e una biglietteria è stata messa all’entrata, in cui i ragazzi erano soliti incontrarsi qui, distante ma non troppo dalla città.

La collina in effetti è un pò a sé stante dal resto, bisogna camminare circa 30 minuti per raggiungere la stazione del tram più vicina. Tutto intorno crescono alberi e cespugli, ma oltre si nasconde la città di Berlino. Vi consiglio davvero di prendervi il tempo per visitare il posto e seguire una visita guidata (vi sconsiglio di scegliere la versione in tedesco a meno che non abbiate un buon livello di comprensione).
